There's also a "Gorilla Raisin Rain" -- keepers hide dried fruit and the gorillas must find the treats (an activity that is both tasty and mind-challenging). We want to watch it all. Especially the Siamangs, which we're particularly sweet on.

Orangutans and Siamangs

The Malay word orangutan means "person of the forest." These are found in Sumatra and Borneo, are highly intelligent and are close relatives of humans.Orangutans have an enormous armspan. A male may stretch his arms some 7 feet (2.1 meters) from fingertip to fingertip. When orangutans do stand, their hands nearly touch the ground! Orangutans have 32 permanent teeth like humans! The siamang is a gibbon species found in the upper canopies of forest regions of Malaysia and Indonesia. They have black fur with long and somewhat saggy hair and it has no tail! Siamangs eat approximately equal amounts of leaves and ripe fruit, also insects, birds and bird eggs. All gibbon species use brachiation (hand-over-hand locomotion) as their primary means of travel through their forest habitat. Powerful upper limbs and limited body weight enable siamangs to swing on branches and vines with great agility. Siamangs hook, rather than grasp, branches with their hands. In the wild, siamangs rarely descend to the forest floor. When required, however, they are efficient at bipedal walking on the ground or along branches, holding their arms above their head for balance. They have similar armspan that of Orangutans. They are kept in ne enclosure at San Diego Zoo. Watch them in action doing a trapeze over tree branches!
